I have an old Droid RAZR. I'm thinking of doing remote desktop so I can leave my laptop home during classes. Do you guys have good/better things to use it for?
(specs: first-release RAZR from Nov. 2011, has a 1.2Gb dual core, 16GB memory)
Now that its out of warranty and no longer on the grid, I want to either find something that works on android's operating system, or install a different OS on it for remote desktop. I'm interested in being able to log in from a wifi hotspot and accessing my computer, which is connected to a different wifi network but still on the internet.
What major security risks should I be aware of? Is it "they can see what I'm doing" or "they can tap into my laptop without me knowing and find information" levels of risk?
Other ideas:
I don't see it being very good for just additional storage, since my current flash drive and current phone hold 64GB combined, so there's no point in an extra 16GB that I'm not using.
I've also considered Near-field communications so I could store junk contacts, files, etc. on one phone in my backpack, and then just use Droid Zap to transfer certain documents when I need them.
Is there a way I can use it to project data on its screen to a larger monitor through its USB port? Maybe an adapter and some software I could combine?
Also, if anyone can share this to Gizmodo or Lifehacker's forums, I would appreciate the added feedback.

Dashcam? GPS?

I can use it for those without modifying it, (or just using my new phone) but both good suggestions. I'm thinking more "root worthy" things.

I actually use my old RAZR MAXX for a dashcam, works great!

I rooted my Thunderbolt and installed a custom OS. Fixed some issues, created others. Rooting doesn't exactly turn it into do anything you can dream of machine. I too tried to find a way to use a monitor or TV to display the phone's screen so I could use it as a nifty Genesis emulator and controller all in one. Couldn't find a a way to do it (unless you have an HDMI out port). Doesn't mean you can't though. I'm sure some tech guys out there have found a way...

Use it as a Gameboy, NES, SNES, N64 emulation device. If you have a wireless 360 controller or a Wii remote, you can get those to pair up nicely.

I have the same phone, so I'll weigh in...
I've never done it on this phone, but I've tried controlling a laptop over RDP with a phone using teamviewer. Pain. In. The. Ass. Best utility I got for this kind of application was using busybox and terminal emulator on my old rooted Droid 1 (if you're going cmd line, that physical keyboard definitely helps) to log into an ssh server. Not the most user-friendly interface, but if you have use for a Unix environment, it's pretty handy (actually used it a couple times during my parallel programming class to do my homework back in the day).
Lifehacker has plenty of articles on safety over public networks and setting up home vpn networks. Here are a couple: http://lifehacker.com/how-to-protect… http://lifehacker.com/5900969/build-…

Some notes on hardware: Your phone has a micro-HDMI port on top (looks more or less like the micro-usb). There are some options in the menu to enable/disable it. I've personally never used it, but I think all you have to do is get yourself a micro-HDMI to HDMI adapter and you can output video and audio to a monitor or TV. As far as NFC go, I don't think the RAZR has the hardware for it, but I'm not 100% on that.
EDIT: also just came across these...worth a look:

It might work as a HUD in addition to a dash-cam...get a bluetooth OBD-II dongle, install a compatible app, and mount the phone on the dash.
